Aftercare

Plant care, written for
a Bihar summer.

Most care advice online is written for a temperate climate and quietly fails here. This is what actually works in Samastipur — and what we tell customers on WhatsApp every week.

How much water does my plant actually need?

More plants die from too much water than too little. The rule is not a schedule — it is the soil.

Check with your finger, not the calendar
Push a finger two inches into the soil. Dry at that depth means water; damp means wait. A plant on a fixed weekly schedule gets drowned in monsoon and parched in May.
Water thoroughly, then stop
When you do water, water until it runs from the drainage hole, then let it drain completely. A daily splash keeps the surface wet and the roots dry, which is the worst of both.
Never let a pot stand in water
Empty the saucer twenty minutes after watering. Roots sitting in water rot, and root rot is almost always fatal by the time the leaves show it.
Our seasons change everything
In a Samastipur May an outdoor pot may need water twice a day. Through the monsoon, most plants need none at all — check before you pour. In the cold weeks of December and January, cut watering by half: wet soil in a cold night is what kills tender plants here, not the cold itself.

Where in my house should this plant go?

"Indoor plant" does not mean "no light". It means indirect light — and the difference is why most indoor plants slowly fade.

"इनडोर प्लांट" का मतलब अंधेरा नहीं है। इसका मतलब है सीधी धूप के बिना उजाला।

Bright indirect light, explained
A spot where you could comfortably read a book during the day, but where the sun never falls directly on the leaves. Usually a metre or two back from a window.
Direct sun burns most indoor plants
Crisp brown patches in the middle of a leaf are sunburn, not thirst. Move the plant back from the glass rather than watering it more.
Leggy growth means too little light
Long bare stems reaching in one direction, with small pale leaves, means the plant is hunting for light. Move it brighter and rotate it a quarter-turn each week.
The genuinely low-light plants
Snake plant, money plant and peace lily will tolerate a dim room. Almost nothing else will — succulents and flowering plants in a dark corner are a slow death.

Soil, feeding and when to repot

Garden soil in a pot compacts into a brick. Potted plants need a mix that drains.

A mix that drains
Roughly two parts garden soil, one part compost or vermicompost, one part coco peat or sand. The point is air around the roots — plain soil in a pot sets solid and suffocates them.
Feed in the growing season only
A balanced fertiliser once a month from March to October. Do not feed in deep winter, and never feed a plant that is sick — a struggling root system cannot use it.
Repot when it tells you to
Roots out of the drainage hole, water running straight through, or growth that has stalled in good conditions. Usually every 18 to 24 months.
Go one size up, not three
A pot much larger than the root ball holds water the roots cannot reach, and that water rots them. Move up by an inch or two of diameter at a time.

Sticky leaves, white fluff and tiny webs

Three pests cause almost every problem on Indian houseplants, and all three are treatable at home.

Mealybugs — white cottony fluff
Clusters in leaf joints. Dab each one with a cotton bud dipped in neem oil solution, then spray the whole plant weekly for a month.
Spider mites — fine webs, speckled leaves
They thrive in dry air, which is why they explode in a north Bihar summer. Rinse the plant thoroughly, raise humidity, and spray neem oil every five days.
Scale — hard brown bumps
They do not move, so people mistake them for part of the plant. Scrape them off with a fingernail and treat with neem oil.
Isolate first, always
Move an infested plant away from the others the day you notice. Every one of these spreads by contact between touching leaves.

A north Bihar year, month by month

Generic care advice is written for temperate climates. Here is what actually matters through our seasons.

March – June · the hard months
Move pots out of afternoon sun before the loo starts blowing. Water outdoor plants early morning and again at dusk. Mulch the soil surface to slow evaporation. Do not repot in peak heat.
July – September · monsoon
Stop watering most things — check first. This is flood-plain country: get pots up off the ground on bricks or a bench so they are not standing in water for days, and watch for fungus on leaves. Otherwise the best window of the year for planting new stock.
October – November · the good weeks
Everything grows. Feed, prune, propagate and repot now. Marigold and seasonal flowers go in for Durga Puja, Diwali and Chhath.
December – January · the cold spell
The part most care guides get wrong for us. Nights here drop to 5–7°C in a cold wave, which is well below what money plant, croton, adenium or areca will tolerate. Move tender pots indoors or under cover at night, keep them off cold floors, halve the watering and stop feeding. Damage shows as blackened, limp leaves a few days after the cold, not during it.
February · coming out of it
Fog lifts and growth restarts. Cut away whatever the cold killed, resume feeding, and repot before the heat arrives in March.
