Shahi Litchiशाही लीची

The one this district is famous for.

Shahi is the variety that earned north Bihar its GI tag — thin skin, small stone, and an aroma nothing else matches. Ripens late May into early June, ahead of China. Air-layered saplings fruit in four to five years, and this is the litchi belt, so the soil and the climate are already right.

  1. Pit 3 × 3 × 3 ft, filled with topsoil, vermicompost and a little sand.
  2. Space 30 ft apart — litchi resents crowding and shades itself out.
  3. Irrigate through flowering and fruit set; a dry April costs you the crop.
  4. Do not disturb the soil around the trunk — the feeder roots sit shallow.
