Teak (Sagwan)सागवान

The timber everybody knows the name of.

The most recognised hardwood in India and the easiest to sell when it comes down. Tissue-culture saplings grow straighter and faster than seed-raised ones. Wants full sun and land that does not waterlog — teak will not tolerate standing water, which matters on this side of the Burhi Gandak.

  1. Plant at the start of the monsoon, into a pit dug a fortnight earlier.
  2. Space 8 × 8 ft for a block; 10 ft along a bund.
  3. Keep the basin weed-free for two years — teak competes badly when young.
  4. Do not plant in low ground that holds water after heavy rain.
